Sermon Series: The Gospel of John

"I Exam"

Against the backdrop of a blind man receiving his sight, ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ in John 9 refer to spiritual sight and spiritual blindness—that is, believing or not believing. It is believing or not believing that proves to be foundational for all the other uses of light and darkness in John’s Gospel: knowing and not knowing (1:9-10); good and evil (3:19-21); truth and deception (5:33-35); and, ultimately, life and death (8:12; 11:9-11).

"Freedom from Sin"

Jesus is confronting the religious leaders of His day, “who had believed in Him”, and He talks about what true freedom is. Jesus is not talking about political freedom as His hearers seem to think; He is speaking of spiritual freedom, that is, freedom from our natural selfish inclinations that we might freely serve God by serving others.

"Christians - No Condemnation"

The scribes and Pharisees parade a woman caught in the act of adultery before Jesus and say, “Moses commanded that such a woman be stoned to death; what do you say?” The way in which Jesus answers this question and the way He treats this woman show us that He takes the Law seriously, more seriously than the scribes and Pharisees; and, we experience the power of His death to bring a “no condemnation” verdict into our lives.

"The Glory of the Trinity"

The astonishing, dynamic conception of the Triune God is bristling with profound, wonderful, life-shaping, world-changing implications. For, if God is triune, then loving relationships in community are the great fountain at the center of reality. Believing in the Trinity means to believe that the world was made by a God who is a community of Persons who have loved each other for all eternity.

"Life-Giving Water"

What is the heart of biblical religion? What is Christianity, ultimately? The essence of Christianity is direct experience of God, God’s lifeblood, God’s stuff, God’s substance, His Spirit penetrating you. What happens to you, what takes place in your heart that people around you experience when you have been given the Holy Spirit?

CONFIRMATION SUNDAY - "What about Me?"

We are shocked to hear, in our Gospel Reading, that “not even Jesus’ brothers believed in Him” (John 7:5). The members of His family, who knew Him best as their elder brother, did not believe in Jesus as the One about whom they should center their lives. This shows us, that just knowing about Jesus does not suffice. We must experience our deep need for Him, His love and forgiveness, His acceptance and gift of righteousness. For, then, and only then, does Jesus become the source and center of our life.

"Christians: True or False"

Jesus’ vivid portrayal of His death – ‘eating’ His flesh and ‘drinking’ His blood – is the source of Life. The message of the cross is, according to the Apostle Paul: “wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30). So, why do people reject the words of Jesus? Why does the message of the cross cause people to turn away from Jesus?

"The Flesh vs. the Spirit"

To Nicodemus, a noble and serious Jerusalem Jew, Jesus had said, “That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is Spirit.” (John 3:6) In our Gospel text, Jesus says to the synagogue crowd in Capernaum, “It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh is no help at all.” (John 6:63). What is the ‘flesh’ and what is the ‘Spirit’? And what do these two statements of our Lord mean for us?

"Drawn to Jesus"

Jesus says, “No one can come to Me unless the Father draws them.” And, then, in the very next verse, Jesus says, “As the Prophets say, ‘All the people will be taught by God.’ ” Jesus’ teaching about sacrificing His physical body and shedding His blood on the cross is the Father’s plan; and this plan, namely the cross, will be, from our human point of view, a ‘foolish and weak endeavor’. Yet, this ‘weak’ and ‘foolish’ event is the very thing that ‘draws’ all men to trust Jesus.

"The Bread of Life"

It was commonly thought that when the Messiah came, the manna – miracle bread from heaven – would resume. Jesus claims that “the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives Life to the world.” Receiving this bread involves coming to Jesus and believing in Him.

"The Work of God"

Jesus knows that everybody has a pervasive spiritual hunger. Everybody, underneath their physical hunger, has a deeper spiritual hunger. He says in John, Chapter 6, verse 27, “Don’t work for the food that spoils, but work for the food that gives you eternal life.” What He simply means is this—we are all seeking to satisfy a hunger within us that is very deep; and anything we put there—whether it’s family, food, drugs, alcohol, social acceptance, money, whatever—it never will satisfy us.

"What are we missing?"

As a people of faith, however, God tells us that He has—through His gift of grace, the life given to us in our baptisms, and through the gift of faith—filled our lives with great purpose and meaning, no matter how menial our place, position, or work may seem.

"Do You Know What You Need?"

The command to us is simple: Pray.  But what does it mean when our prayers seem to come back to us empty?  Is God really listening?  Is he even there?  Is what we percieve as the response from God really what he is telling us?  This sermon explores these questions and ultimately encourages us to trust in the promise of God who encourages us to shamelessly lay our prayers at Jesus feet.

"2 + 2 = 5"

The wolrd works in certain ways.  It pushes and pulls us and we can almost predict the good and bad that will come our way.  But the promise of God...and his interaction with our world in the life-giving work of Jesus...is that God has given us something different, better, and unexpected.

"I Wonder Where the Wonder Went"

We all get overcome by the things of life.  Then, in a flash, we become like the posessed man in Luke 8 and forget who we are.  Today we are reminded of the mind of God our Father, who seeks us out amidst the wilderness of our world, to restore the wonder of our faith in his promise that we are indeed heirs of his grace.

"You're the Man!"

Sounds good doesn't it?  But when Nathan confronts David with this line, it is anything but positive.  We are the ones who deserve death and hell, and yet God lovingly restores us and gives to us his forgiveness in life.  Who does Jesus love?  You're the one!

"The Fashion of Compassion"

How does Jesus love us?  He has literally "put us on" in clothing himself in our humanity so that he could save us from the death and sin that has so entangled our existence.  This is the fashion of His compassion - that he has put on our death, that we might be clothed with His life.

"Dirty Feet"

We all want a cause to believe in, to defend, worth fighting for. But sometimes when you dig in your heels, all you really get is dirty feet. The readings and message today aren't about a defensive love…but one that proactively reaches out to all, breaking down barriers, tearing down walls. Today is about a Savior who brings us together, washes the dust from our feet, and the sends us out for his purpose.

Inconceivable (Trinity Sunday)

We celebrate our God: Creator, Redeemer, Sanctifier. The mysterious and yet marvelous expression of our God as ONE and yet THREE is cornerstone to the Christian confession of the “who” and the “what” of God the Father, Jesus, God the Son, and The Holy Spirit connect, work relate and work together. The Trinity is hard to get our mind around. But, the Trinity is also nothing less than the complete expression of God’s love and grace worked out for and among and with you and me.

Stuck Together

This is the Sunday of Pentecost.
This is when the separation in the world between all peoples, and the separation between all peoples and God, is undone as God pours out His Spirit on the world so that we might know our God and be brought into relationship with Him.
