Sermon Series: The Gospel of John

"The Only Way"

Jesus made many outrageous claims, and maybe the most outrageous of all is the one we read in John 14:6. “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

"HOME"

Jesus knows that the hearts of His disciples are troubled. He knows they will be scattered like frightened sheep in the face of His arrest and crucifixion. So what does He speak about to give them assurance and courage? Whatever He has to comfort them had better be pretty good stuff. What words can He give to comfort them? And, if His words comfort them and work for them, they should work for us.

"LIFE"

Our quest for LIFE is not new. It has been aching in the heart of people for a long time. This is the voracious hunger of everyone in all times and in all places. So, when Jesus says, “The Father who sent Me gave Me orders, told Me what to say and how to say it. And I know exactly what His command produces: real and eternal Life.”, He is speaking about satisfying this deep heartfelt human need.

"Whose Approval"

One of my favorite poets – e. e. cummings – wrote: “yes is a world and in this world of yes (skillfully curled) live all worlds.” What is my world of “yes” and what does this mean for my life – now and forever?

"The Cross"

Today we’re looking at what Jesus says about His own death. Jesus is telling us two things about His death, about THE CROSS: THE CROSS is judgment on the world’s values, our natural way of thinking; and THE CROSS is attractive to our hearts; the power of the cross warms and transforms our hearts. So, every human mind finds the cross offensive; yet, every human heart that perceives what Jesus has accomplished on the cross is attracted by it.

"The Weight of Glory"

Our John text today is all about glory. What do you think of when you think of glory? The reason we need to talk about glory is because every single person on this planet is after glory. We all seek it. We are all starved for it. We all desperately need to know that we matter.

"Extravagant Love"

Mary does something that is truly shocking, amazing, and astounding. These things which she does are so outrageous, so shameful, so disgusting, so offensive that the disciples start yelling at her. What did she do?

"Mary's Need"

This Sunday we continue what was started last week looking at the two ways in which Jesus approaches people caught in the grip of grief. In John 11, Jesus is confronted by the grief of Martha and Mary as they both express the same lament: “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus responds differently to Martha than He does with Mary. Last week we focused on Jesus’ interaction with Martha. This morning, we consider His wordless compassion shown to Mary.

"Martha's Need"

This Sunday and next, we will look at two ways in which Jesus approaches people caught in the grip of grief. In John 11, Jesus is confronted by the grief of Martha and Mary as they both express the same lament: “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus responds differently to Martha than He does with Mary. This week we will focus on Jesus’ interaction with Martha, wherein He utters some of the most famous words in the New Testament: “I am the resurrection and the life; he/she who believes in Me shall live even if he/she dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die.”

"I Exam"

Against the backdrop of a blind man receiving his sight, ‘light’ and ‘darkness’ in John 9 refer to spiritual sight and spiritual blindness—that is, believing or not believing. It is believing or not believing that proves to be foundational for all the other uses of light and darkness in John’s Gospel: knowing and not knowing (1:9-10); good and evil (3:19-21); truth and deception (5:33-35); and, ultimately, life and death (8:12; 11:9-11).

"Freedom from Sin"

Jesus is confronting the religious leaders of His day, “who had believed in Him”, and He talks about what true freedom is. Jesus is not talking about political freedom as His hearers seem to think; He is speaking of spiritual freedom, that is, freedom from our natural selfish inclinations that we might freely serve God by serving others.

"Christians - No Condemnation"

The scribes and Pharisees parade a woman caught in the act of adultery before Jesus and say, “Moses commanded that such a woman be stoned to death; what do you say?” The way in which Jesus answers this question and the way He treats this woman show us that He takes the Law seriously, more seriously than the scribes and Pharisees; and, we experience the power of His death to bring a “no condemnation” verdict into our lives.

"The Glory of the Trinity"

The astonishing, dynamic conception of the Triune God is bristling with profound, wonderful, life-shaping, world-changing implications. For, if God is triune, then loving relationships in community are the great fountain at the center of reality. Believing in the Trinity means to believe that the world was made by a God who is a community of Persons who have loved each other for all eternity.

"Life-Giving Water"

What is the heart of biblical religion? What is Christianity, ultimately? The essence of Christianity is direct experience of God, God’s lifeblood, God’s stuff, God’s substance, His Spirit penetrating you. What happens to you, what takes place in your heart that people around you experience when you have been given the Holy Spirit?

CONFIRMATION SUNDAY - "What about Me?"

We are shocked to hear, in our Gospel Reading, that “not even Jesus’ brothers believed in Him” (John 7:5). The members of His family, who knew Him best as their elder brother, did not believe in Jesus as the One about whom they should center their lives. This shows us, that just knowing about Jesus does not suffice. We must experience our deep need for Him, His love and forgiveness, His acceptance and gift of righteousness. For, then, and only then, does Jesus become the source and center of our life.

"Christians: True or False"

Jesus’ vivid portrayal of His death – ‘eating’ His flesh and ‘drinking’ His blood – is the source of Life. The message of the cross is, according to the Apostle Paul: “wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30). So, why do people reject the words of Jesus? Why does the message of the cross cause people to turn away from Jesus?

"The Flesh vs. the Spirit"

To Nicodemus, a noble and serious Jerusalem Jew, Jesus had said, “That which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is Spirit.” (John 3:6) In our Gospel text, Jesus says to the synagogue crowd in Capernaum, “It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh is no help at all.” (John 6:63). What is the ‘flesh’ and what is the ‘Spirit’? And what do these two statements of our Lord mean for us?

"Drawn to Jesus"

Jesus says, “No one can come to Me unless the Father draws them.” And, then, in the very next verse, Jesus says, “As the Prophets say, ‘All the people will be taught by God.’ ” Jesus’ teaching about sacrificing His physical body and shedding His blood on the cross is the Father’s plan; and this plan, namely the cross, will be, from our human point of view, a ‘foolish and weak endeavor’. Yet, this ‘weak’ and ‘foolish’ event is the very thing that ‘draws’ all men to trust Jesus.

"The Bread of Life"

It was commonly thought that when the Messiah came, the manna – miracle bread from heaven – would resume. Jesus claims that “the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives Life to the world.” Receiving this bread involves coming to Jesus and believing in Him.

"The Work of God"

Jesus knows that everybody has a pervasive spiritual hunger. Everybody, underneath their physical hunger, has a deeper spiritual hunger. He says in John, Chapter 6, verse 27, “Don’t work for the food that spoils, but work for the food that gives you eternal life.” What He simply means is this—we are all seeking to satisfy a hunger within us that is very deep; and anything we put there—whether it’s family, food, drugs, alcohol, social acceptance, money, whatever—it never will satisfy us.

PALM SUNDAY is about the fact that the King is coming back and He is Jesus, the true King. His kingship will bring blessedness. Where you see the word blessedness—substitute ultimate meaning, endless riches, profoundest personal fulfillment, personal and social revolution, … all of those things.
